The play was fast and furious this afternoon in the Tom Dwan Million Dollar Challenge. The tables fired up around 3:30pm ET and play stretched for 1,214 hands. By the time the smoke cleared in the two-hour session, Dwan had cut into Dan “JungleMan12” Cates’ lead by $63,000. At one point, Dwan pulled to within $200,000 of his foe overall, but Cates battled back to maintain a $500,000 edge. Needless to say, the challenge is far from over.
There have been 14,190 hands played out of the 50,000 required for completion. Big pots were the name of the game in today’s session, as five of the challenge’s 10 largest pots were played. In the richest, the first of the challenge to cross the $200,000 mark, Dwan bumped it to $1,200 pre-flop and Cates added another $4,000. Dwan pushed it to $14,500 and Cates called to bring a flop of 9-3-6.
Cates checked and Dwan fired out a bet of $17,800. Cates called to build a pot passing $60,000 and the turn was a five. Cates checked and Dwan open-shoved all-in for a whopping $166,000. Cates, sitting on $72,000, called all-in and flipped up 8-7 for the nuts. Dwan showed 9-5 for two pair and was suddenly drawing thin to the river.
Dwan and Cates agreed to run the river twice. A four on the first board gave half of the pot, or $105,000, to Cates and a deuce on the second board completed the sweep. Cates scooped the entire $210,000 bounty and drastically cut into Dwan’s edge on the session.
Three pots passed $150,000 during the latest session and Dwan made it three days in a row of coming out ahead. Cates, once up by over $800,000, has now seen his lead shrink to just a half-million dollars. Cates still holds a significant advantage in the number of pots won, claiming 8,265, or 58%. Dwan, meanwhile, has racked up wins in 5,826 pots, or 42%.
The session also saw Dwan vent his frustrations with his internet connection via Twitter. The youngster took two Tweets two express his disappointment: “Just had one of the most tilting hands of my life happen. Was playing JungleMan in the challenge and my internet cut out, so I checked behind the nuts in a spot where he would’ve 100% called with 2 pair for $34,683 more. So tilted.”
The action has definitely picked up in recent days, so let’s hope the trend continues.
