On Wednesday morning, Tom “durrrr” Dwan and Dan “JungleMan12” Cates battled it out for over 1,400 hands as part of the ongoing Million Dollar Challenge. The day saw Dwan continue to cut into Cates’ lead, this time by almost $9,000. Now, Cates is up by $564,000 after 12,976 hands. A total of 50,000 hands are required for completion, so there’s still a long way to go.
In a $60,000 pot that occurred on Wednesday morning, Dwan raised to $1,200 pre-flop and Cates 3bet the action to $3,600. Dwan made the call and the flop came 2-9-4 with two hearts. Cates, the first to act, fired out a continuation bet of $3,600 and Dwan moved all-in over the top for $26,000. Cates snap-called and showed pocket queens, while Dwan tabled 10-5 of hearts for a flush draw.
Dwan and Cates agreed to run it twice, with the nine of spades and ace of diamonds filling out the first board to give Cates half. On the second run, the ace of clubs and ten of clubs hit, shipping the entire $60,000 pot to Cates. “JungleMan12” recouped $9,700 in losses during the final 242 hands played, but Dwan still cut into his lead by $21,000 when all was said and done in the most recent encounter.
Dwan has prevailed on the last two days of play, slicing Cates’ lead by nearly $200,000. If Dwan is up by at least $1 at the end of 50,000 hands, then Cates will owe $500,000. If Cates is up by at least $1 at the end of the challenge, then Dwan will owe $1.5 million after giving any challenger 3:1 odds. In either case, the victor keeps the spoils of the action at the tables.
In a running thread on TwoPlusTwo, posters noted that the action in the Durrrr Challenge was relatively subdued this time around. One member wrote, “It’s been much more passive this time. They haven’t stacked each other at all yet.” Another poster typed, “Dwan just shipped a $28K pot with quad nines. Nothing else really happening.”
The Dwan versus Cates installment of the Durrrr Challenge began in late August. Many expected the duo to be able to complete the requisite 50,000 hands by the start of the 2010 World Series of Poker Europe in September, but the challenge remains just 25% finished with 2011 quickly approaching. We’ll keep you posted right here on DurrrrChallenge.com.
