Hand Analysis from Recent Play

After what feels like an eternity, we saw action at the Durrrr Challenge tables after the longest layoff yet. The good news is that this might spark a raging fire of action between Tom Dwan and Patrik Antonius now that the WSOP is completed. Let’s take a look at two of the critical hands from the 462 recently played.

The higher flush takes the hand

Analysis

Dwan was in the big blind with a marginal hand of 5-A-3-8, but he was double-suited and had some interesting low straight possibilities. Antonius made the standard pre-flop button raise with 5-3-6-2 double-suited to hearts (same as Dwan’s suited ace) and diamonds. Dwan 3bet, which has been pretty standard during the challenge, and was flatted by Antonius in position. The flop of 2-2-8 rainbow didn’t do much for either player’s flush possibilities, but it gave Antonius trip twos on the flop. Dwan’s aggression in the hand is a little surprising and the fact that Antonius flatted and didn’t continue with an all-in is equally as surprising. Whether Dwan was trying to get Antonius to fold and whether Antonius was potentially trapping with the intention of getting Dwan to go all-in at the turn are potential meta-game questions. The jack of hearts came on the turn and Dwan bet his stack, which was little more than half-pot, with the nut flush draw and two pair. Antonius instantly called with his inferior flush draw and trips. Antonius was an 80%-20% favorite, but one of Dwan’s outs came on the river, the king of hearts, and $139,593 headed his way. No complaining for “Durrrr” of running bad in this hand!

Analysis

This time, Dwan had the button and raised with 7-8-9-J with three diamonds and was 3bet by Antonius, who held a monster PLO heads-up hand, A-2-K-A. Dwan flatted the 3bet and the players saw a flop of J-9-3, which hit Dwan hard with top two pair. Antonius went for a check-call, which we interpret (thanks to knowing his turn play) as a probable trap for Dwan. The two of spades came on the turn, which didn’t do anything for either player. Antonius check-raised Dwan all-in and “Durrrr” snapped it off in a heartbeat. With the money in, Dwan was way ahead as a 75%-25% favorite and held up with the queen of hearts on the river. Dwan was fortunate that he outflopped Antonius, who might have overplayed his pocket aces in this situation.
