Hand Analysis from Jan 27 Session

The boys finally resumed the Durrrr Challenge for 2010 as we actually come close to the one year anniversary of its start. Although the pace has been tremendously slow over the entire Antonius vs Dwan segment of the challenge, we got a healthy dose of hands played last night. Let’s take a look at two of the critical hands of the session.

Analysis

The pre-flop action had Antonius on the big blind with a stack that was over twice of Dwan’s. His 6-K-9-K single suited to spades was a strong hand for heads-up and his 3bet was just flatted by Dwan. Clearly, Antonius had the better hand starting out against Dwan’s 2-7-3-3 single suited to hearts.

The flop of 2-K-4 with two spades gave Antonius top set and a second nut flush redraw, while Dwan didn’t improve his hand. The odd thing about this hand is that Antonius slow played his big flop. We’ve seen plenty of instances of one of these guys leading into the other on a flop to induce large raises. This time both players checked it.

The turn gave Dwan two pair (twos and sevens) and this time the slow playing was over for Antonius. Dwan re-raised and Antonius shoved the rest of his stack in. Dwan obviously felt like he was mathematically committed with just $11,599 left into about a $64,000 pot. The problem is that he shoved his money in drawing completely dead at the turn, a true rarity in Pot Limit Omaha.

Analysis

Both players had monster PLO hands pre-flop with Dwan holding K-T-A-Q single suited to hearts while Antonius had 4-5-6-7 suited to spades. Again we see a 3bet call pre-flop which has been the standard through the entire durrrr challenge. The flop came 7-K-4 with two diamonds giving nobody a flush draw. What it did do is pair Dwan to a King and give Antonius bottom two pair and a big straight redraw. Dwan played his weak hand fairly slow and check-called the flop.

The turn brought the Jack of clubs which meant that Antonius didn’t improve but Dwan did pick up a straight draw of his own. Dwan potted the turn which was raised by Antonius and then called by Dwan, each hoping their hand would either hold up or improve to the nuts. It was Antonius that held the slight 55-45% edge when the money went in, with the river 8 spiking Antonius to the winning straight and a $103,989 pot.
