Durrrr Challenge Round One – Big Hands and Comments

The Durrrr Challenge has begun at Full Tilt Poker between Tom “durrrr” Dwan and noted poker pro Patrik Antonius. This round 1 challenge featured four tables of $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Hi with each buying in for $40,000 per table. Let’s take a look at some of the big pots from the first round of action.

Durrrr Draws First Blood

Total pot: $21800 | Rake: $0.50
Results:
Patrik Antonius didn’t show
durrrr had 7, 4, A, 6 (full house, Aces over sixes).
Outcome: durrrr won $21799.50

Analysis: Chalk the first big pot up to durrrr who gets in with a only a fairly decent hand for Pot Limit Omaha Hi by calling the standard raise of Antonius preflop. Obviously, there’s so much meta-game going on, and so much history between two of the best players on the planet, that no team of experts could 100% accurately know what’s going on in the hand, but clearly durrr hit a bit of a heater here by hitting two pair on the flop and a boat on the turn. Although we don’t know what Antonius had it’s easy to guess he might have been on a Ace type of hand or even made a flush at the turn.

Durrrr Hits a Monster … and checks the river!?

Full Tilt Pot-Limit Omaha, $400.00 BB (2 handed)
durrrr (SB) ($40798.50)
Patrik Antonius (Button) ($79190.50)
Preflop: Patrik Antonius raises to $1200, durrrr calls $800
Flop: ($2400) 8, 6, 7 (2 players)
durrrr checks, Patrik Antonius bets $2000, durrrr calls $2000
Turn: ($6400) 2 (2 players)
durrrr checks, Patrik Antonius bets $5200, durrrr calls $5200
River: ($16800) 3 (2 players)
durrrr checks, Patrik Antonius checks
Total pot: $16800 | Rake: $0.50
Results:
Patrik Antonius had A, 6, 5, 9 (straight, nine high).
durrrr had 5, 10, 9, J (flush, ten high).
Outcome: durrrr won $16799.50

Analysis: Before the flop their hands actually match up to a near coinflip if you put them into an odds calculator for Omaha. On the flop we see durrrr run in Godmode and hit a straight flush while Antonius flops a 9-high straight. Antonius goes for the continuation bet and durrrr flat calls. On the turn a two hits (at this point a heart hitting doesn’t change anything in terms of flushes out there) and durrrr yet again calls the sizeable bet on the turn from Antonius. Now for the play that has most of the internet buzzing. The river 3 of diamonds comes, clearly a brick for both players, and durrrr checks yet again. Was it patience? Was it meta-game thinking that Antonius was going to fire a third barrel (perhaps durrrr thinks him likely to do so) and go for a sizeable check-raise? Either way it appeared to cost durrrr money as Antonius wisely slowed down and checked his straight and came up on the short end of a ~$17,000 pot.

Runner Runner Miracle for durrrr brings in $40k

Full Tilt Pot-Limit Omaha, $400.00 BB (2 handed)
durrrr (Button) ($110582)
Patrik Antonius (SB) ($35520.50)
Preflop: durrrr raises to $1200, Patrik Antonius raises to $3600, durrrr calls $2400
Flop: ($7200) 7, 4, 6 (2 players)
Patrik Antonius checks, durrrr checks
Turn: ($7200) 5 (2 players)
Patrik Antonius checks, durrrr checks
River: ($7200) 5 (2 players)
Patrik Antonius bets $4400, durrrr raises to $15600, Patrik Antonius calls $11200
Total pot: $38400 | Rake: $0.50
Results:
durrrr had 5, K, 2, 5 (four of a kind, fives).
Patrik Antonius didn’t show
Outcome: durrrr won $38399.50

Analysis: Although we don’t know what Antonius had in this hand, we’re guessing that he was ahead preflop and probably remained slightly ahead at the flop when durrrr simply had a pair of fives and was on an open ended straight draw. The turn was where durrrr clearly played some meta-game slow playing his set, although he would be losing to any hand (with many possibilities) that made the straight. The river is really where durrrr spikes his money card by hitting the near nuts with quads and unfortunately for Antonius he bets into his opponent, who raises, and he calls to come up on the short end of a $40,000 pot.

Final Round 1 Comments:

Unofficially after 1,535 hands played Dwan is up $134,912 up and Antonius down $135,209. We look forward to more action from the Durrrr Challenge soon!
