It’s been a rough go for Tom “durrrr” Dwan in the second installment of the Durrrr Challenge. Dwan’s battle against Dan “jungleman12” Cates has seen him trail nearly the entire way. Earlier this week, Dwan’s woes continued, as he dropped another $122,000 to Cates over the course of 348 hands played late Monday night and into Tuesday morning. A total of 17,456 hands have been played of the 50,000 required for completion.
In a sizable $80,000 pot during this week’s encounter, a flop of 9-8-6 with two diamonds brought fireworks from our two favorite high-stakes poker players. Cates, after 3betting pre-flop, checked and Dwan fired out a bet of $4,800. Perhaps not surprisingly, Cates check-raised to $10,800 and Dwan moved all-in for $48,000. Cates called for his stack to set up an $80,000 pot.
When the hands were revealed, Dwan showed pocket sevens for a pair and an open-ended straight draw, while Cates flipped up K-J of diamonds for two overcards and a flush draw. The turn and river were run twice in the coin flip situation.
In the first board, the eight of hearts and nine of spades hit to give both players two pair, nines and eights. However, Cates’ king played and he scooped $40,000. In the second board, a queen of hearts on the turn left Cates rooting for a diamond, king, or jack on the river. Sure enough, the king of hearts fell and he raked in the entire $80,000 pot. We’d imagine that Dwan was not too pleased about dropping both halves of the monster pot.
