Analysis from the March 24 Session

The session from March 24th was definitely eventful and saw some huge hands between Tom Dwan and Patrik Antonius. After nearly two hours, they had three pots that exceeded $120,000 and, once the session was completed, Antonius had successful cut into Dwan’s lead.

Hand Analysis

Pre-flop, we see that both players picked up double suited hands, but Antonius held Q-K-J-A as opposed to Durrrr’s 9-5-6-J, which had more gaps than Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel from television’s “The Simpsons.” Pre-flop, Antonius was on the button and made a raise with Durrrr 3betting back. At this point, Antonius was all too happy to get it all-in with his hand that had both the nut and second nut flush possibilities as well as the prospects of a nut straight. Durrrr called and the flop of 8-6-9 with two clubs was more than enough for Antonius, who max betted once checked to by Durrrr. The flop isn’t horrible for Durrrr, who hit top and bottom par and a gutshot draw. On the turn, the Ace of hearts hit, giving Durrrr a redraw to a heart flush and improving Antonius to top pair plus the second nut flush draw. The boys predictably got the rest of their money in and the odds calculator says that, at that point, it was a virtual coin flip with Dwan holding a 52-48% advantage. The King of spades hit the river and gave Antonius the better two pair and an unimaginable $163,596 pot.

Hand Analysis

Preflop we can see that Durrrr had a modest monster for Pot Limit Omaha Heads Up with A-J-A-K single suited while Antonius held a hidden gem in 7-6-T-9 double suited, which had excellent big pot possibilities. Pre-flop, we see the guys go crazy with their hands with a 3bet from Durrrr, a 4bet from Antonius, and a rare 5bet from Durrrr that was flatted. The flop of 3-9-Q forced Durrrr to get it all in with his pair of Aces and backdoor straight draws which was immediately called by Antonius holding a pair of nines, a gutshot (needs a 10), and a flush draw. For all of his draws, Antonius got it in as a slight favorite in a 57-43% situation, which he won when a nine came on the turn and a Queen was delivered on the river. It’s interesting to look at the pre-flop aggression, with Durrrr clearly playing pocket aces plus connecting cards in one of the few pre-flop 5bets we’ve seen during the Challenge. The problem he ran into was that Antonius had a great drawing hand. Even if they were to have gotten the money all-in pre-flop, Dwan was only a 54-46% favorite.
