Against the Odds: Big Hands from Week 1

Since Omaha is a game of draws, the big suck outs players see so often in Hold’em are few and far between. If players get it all-in with cards to come, it is fairly unusual for one to have an overwhelming statistical advantage over the other. That being said, some of the biggest pots we’ve seen in the durrrr challenge so far have seen one of the two players rally from behind going into the river to take down the hand. Here are two of the biggest pots from the first week of play where one player got it in with the best of it only to come out with the worst of it:

Session 3: durrrr makes a bigger boat

Full Tilt Poker $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Hi – 2 players

durrrr (BB): $56999.50
Patrik Antonius (BTN/SB): $102989.00

Pre Flop: ($600.00)
Patrik Antonius raises to $1200, durrrr raises to $3600, Patrik Antonius calls $2400

Flop: ($7200.00) 6c 6d 5s (2 players)
durrrr bets $4800, Patrik Antonius requests TIME, Patrik Antonius raises to $15200, durrrr requests TIME, durrrr raises to $28500, Patrik Antonius raises to $60600, durrrr calls $24899.50 all in

Turn: ($113999.00) 4h (2 players – 1 is all in)

River: ($113999.00) 8h (2 players – 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $113999.00
durrrr shows 6s Ts 7h 8c (a full house, Sixes full of Eights)
Patrik Antonius shows 5c 2d Kc 5d (a full house, Fives full of Sixes)
durrrr wins $113998.50
(Rake: $0.50)

To inexperienced Omaha players, this hand looks a lot worse than it actually was. Preflop the two players’ hands were in a statistical dead heat and even after Patrik hit his set on the flop, he was only a 58% favorite to win. durrrr likely thought his open-ended straight draw gave him additional outs that, in actuality, he did not have, but his all-in call on the flop was getting him the right price to try and hit a bigger boat. Patrik pulled further ahead on the turn and was now 75% to win, but durrrr managed to spike his eight on the river to take down the monster pot, which helped to keep his losses on the session under the $200K mark.

Session 4: kings vs. aces all-in preflop for $104K

Full Tilt Poker $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Hi – 2 players

durrrr (BTN/SB): $102990.50
Patrik Antonius (BB): $51993.00

Pre Flop: ($600.00)
durrrr raises to $1200, Patrik Antonius raises to $3600, durrrr raises to $10800, Patrik Antonius raises to $32400, durrrr raises to $97200, Patrik Antonius calls $19593 all in

Flop: ($103986.00) 9c Kd Qh

Turn: ($103986.00) 4h

River: ($103986.00) 5s

Final Pot: $103986.00
durrrr shows 5c Ac Jh Ah (a pair of Aces)
Patrik Antonius shows Kc Th Jc Kh (a straight, King high)
Patrik Antonius wins $103985.50
(Rake: $0.50)

This hand occurred midway through the 4th session and helped Patrik to pull closer to even with durrrr, who had gotten off to a fast start. This cooler of a hand ended up all-in preflop with durrrr holding the 70% advantage. Patrik hit a dream flop with a straight and a set of kings that gave his hand the possibility of improving if necessary and became the 82% favorite with two cards to come. durrrr picked up a heart draw on the turn to go with his gutshot broadway draw, but Patrik was holding some of his remaining outs, so durrrr only had a 22.5% chance to make a winning hand on the river. The straight held for Antonius and he was able to pick up the six-figure pot.
