Against the Odds: The Last Two Weeks

Challenge action screeched to a halt after last week’s session when Patrik picked up over $300K in just over an hour. Since then, durrrr has busied himself with some heads-up matches with Gus Hansen, Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies and Phil Ivey. Two days after his worst Challenge session to date, durrrr took an impressive $1 million off of Hansen in PLO, but he lost a good chunk of his winnings back this past Sunday after a long day at the tables.

Since durrrr seems more occupied with other high stakes action than with the Challenge, let’s take advantage of this pause in play and break down the odds from a couple of hands from the past two sessions in this latest installment of Against the Odds:

Rivered Straight for $101K

Full Tilt Poker $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Hi – 2 players

durrrr (BTN/SB): $139491.50
Patrik Antonius (BB): $50500.00

Pre Flop: ($600.00)
durrrr raises to $1200, Patrik Antonius raises to $3600, durrrr calls $2400

Flop: ($7200.00) 2s Tc Kc (2 players)

Turn: ($19200.00) 6h (2 players)
Patrik Antonius bets $19200, durrrr raises to $76800, Patrik Antonius calls $21700 all in

River: ($101000.00) Qs (2 players – 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $101000.00
durrrr shows 6c Kh 6s 7h (three of a kind, Sixes)
Patrik Antonius shows As Js Qd 9s (a straight, Ace high)
Patrik Antonius wins $100999.50

This hand from the April 27th session saw all the chips go in the middle on the turn with durrrr holding a set to Patrik’s wrap. Preflop the two hands are in a statistical coinflip with Patrik holding the slight edge with his suited ace. Despite flopping top pair, durrr is still behind against Patrik’s big draw, but he is only a 55/45 dog going into the turn. Obviously, the turn is a great card for durrr since he hits his set and becomes the 70% favorite to take down the hand with one card to come. Unfortunately for durrr, Antonius hits one of his twelve outs on the river to make his straight and earn him the $101K pot.

Big Pot for durrrr–Nearly $200K

Full Tilt Poker $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Hi – 2 players

durrrr (BB): $99480.50
Patrik Antonius (BTN/SB): $100488.50

Pre Flop: ($600.00)
Patrik Antonius raises to $1200, durrrr raises to $3600, Patrik Antonius raises to $6000, durrrr raises to $18000, Patrik Antonius raises to $54000, durrrr calls $36000

durrrr bets $45480.50 all in, Patrik Antonius calls $45480.50

Turn: ($198961.00) 5s (2 players – 1 is all in)

River: ($198961.00) 9c (2 players – 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $198961.00
durrrr shows Qd Ts 8c 9d (a full house, Nines full of Eights)
Patrik Antonius shows Ad Kh Kc As (two pair, Aces and Nines)
durrrr wins $198960.50
(Rake: $0.50)

This hand from the April 27th session reminds us that even though A-A-K-K may look like an excellent hand, it is never too far ahead preflop, especially if you’re hand isn’t suited, as is the case here. It is still a strong hand, particularly in a heads up situation, which helps explain why there are five raises before the duo sees a flop. Patrik is the 60/40 favorite against durrrr’s suited and connected cards, but after durrrr flops top two with straight possibilities Patrik’s stellar preflop holdings are now a 3-1 underdog. Even though Patrik’s hand doesn’t connect with the board, with so much money put in preflop he is getting the right price to call with his overpairs. The turn doesn’t change much of anything for either player and Anotonius has a 25% chance of making a bigger two pair or hitting his set on the river. durrrr’s eights and nines hold though and he takes down one of the biggest pots of the session.

And Another 150K for Patrik 15 Minutes Later

Full Tilt Poker $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Hi – 2 players

durrrr (BB): $84521.00
Patrik Antonius (BTN/SB): $75475.00

Pre Flop: ($600.00)
Patrik Antonius raises to $1200, durrrr raises to $3600, Patrik Antonius raises to $6000, durrrr calls $2400

Turn: ($29200.00) 5c (2 players)
durrrr bets $29200, Patrik Antonius raises to $60875 all in, durrrr calls $31675

River: ($150950.00) Kd (2 players – 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $150950.00
durrrr shows 8d Qc 9d Qh (a pair of Queens)
Patrik Antonius shows As 8h Ts 5h (two pair, Eights and Fives)
Patrik Antonius wins $150949.50
(Rake: $0.50)

This last hand comes from the May 4th session and is one of several $150K pots that PA took down. Chris “Fox” Wallace has already done an excellent analysis of the strategy involved in this hand, but we thought we’d break down the odds on the hand as well to see how durrrr’s overpair fares against a flush draw.

Preflop durrrr only has a small advantage (54%) over Patrik’s double suited hand as it is a typical race situation. Both players flop a pair of eights, but Patrik actually has the 58% edge on the flop with his pair and flush draw versus durrrr’s pair and overpair with no flush possibilities. Once Patrik picks up his second pair on the turn durrrr is left with only a 30% shot of making the best hand. Considering the way he was running that day, it is relatively unsurprising when Patrik’s hand holds and he takes the $150K hand.
