As promised, Dwan was sadly absent from the World Series of Poker’s June 16-17 events, including the one in which he earned a runner-up finish last year. By the weekend, though, durrrr was back in the action. Unfortunately, the brief break didn’t do much to improve Dwan’s game. Dwan was one of 3,144 players to enter the popular Event #34: $1000 No-Limit Hold’em, but he was already out only a few hours in.
While Dwan’s Twitter page has been sadly absent of activity since before the weekend, today friend and fellow pro Brian Powell revealed that durrrr’s not only in Event #35: $5000 Pot-Limit Omaha 6-Handed today, but he’s starting at a table with both Powell and Dani Stern, plus an unnamed European player has already served durrrr some table talk. Let’s hope Dwan’s inside information on today’s opponents will help him survive to see another Day 2.
In the meantime, a whole new crew of first-time WSOP winners have been grabbing bracelets. WPT titleholder Andy Frankenberger added a WSOP title to his resume in Dwan’s favored event – Event #28: $1500 NL Hold’em. Event #30: Seniors No-Limit Hold’em Championship’s winner was not only the oldest first-time bracelet winner at the 2011 WSOP, he was simultaneously the youngest competitor at the same event’s final table. Fifty year old Jim Hess has been posting small cashes since 2004, but the majority of his current lifetime earnings total of $595,742 can be accredited to his recent $557,435 win at the WSOP.
Unfortunately, not everyone got the cards or cash they were looking for at the WSOP felt last week. Daniel Negreanu had an especially tough time in buddy Dwan’s absence. Believe it or not, Negreanu’s actually been having a worse 2011 WSOP than durrrr with only one tiny $4,998 cash to his credit thus far. Though Negreanu made it to Day 2 of Event #27, the $10,000 Limit Hold’em Championship, a couple of bad beats were all it took to send the esteemed pro over the edge (and to the rail shortly thereafter).
While Dwan has remained largely optimistic following his long string of defeats, Negreanu’s tweets have become visibly more frustrated as the series progresses. After losing a key hand in the aforementioned Limit Hold’em Championship, Negreanu finally snapped, throwing back his chair and stomping his headphones. With only 27,000 chips left, it didn’t take long for the other players to finish him off. Today, Kid Poker jokingly reported that he’d replaced his headphones, but with a tinge of bitterness the Canadian pro promised that, “If I lose to another straight flush today that’ll make two pairs smashed in two days.”
