Durrrr Watch Continues At 2011 WSOP

Tom Dwan’s desperate bracelet chase continues at this year’s WSOP. Durrrr was one of only 126 players to enter Event #16: 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship, and he was already out his $10,000 buy-in by the end of Day 1. At least he was in good company; Doyle Brunson, Galen Hall and Carlos Mortensen were among some of the other notable early eliminations.

To add insult to injury, while Dwan continues his ongoing battle for a bracelet, several other contenders have become first time WSOP winners this year. In fact, all of the WSOP events that have thus far been decided have been won by first-time titlists. With no clear frontrunner almost a third of the way into the series, it’s anyone’s guess who will get the WSOP 2011 Player of the Year. For his part, Dwan remains undeterred by his lack of success. Per today’s Twitter activity, he’s already moved on to Event #17: $1500 H.O.R.S.E.

Another durrrr tweet raised some eyebrows earlier this week, but it had nothing to do with the series. On Tuesday, Dwan tweeted “If anyone was wondering how hand sanitizer tastes… Its prolly the worst taste I’ve ever had in my mouth.” Several different news portals highlighted the off-beat tweet, and after many of Dwan’s followers and friends had some fun with the quote, he returned to his page to admit that he probably shouldn’t be playing and tweeting at the same time. It’s unclear if Dwan’s mid-game sanitizer snack was an innocent accident or one of the pro’s famous prop bets.

Speaking of prop bets, original Durrrr Challenge opponent Patrik Antonius will finally be fulfilling the tennis challenge he accepted from Brandon Adams back in January. Antonius and Adams will be taking a break from their WSOP pursuits on Sunday, June 12. They’ll be meeting up for their tennis match at 2pm at Las Vegas’ International Tennis Centre. Antonius is so confident that his skills are superior that he’s wagered $295,000 against Adams’ modest stake of $30,000.

Though watching Dwan enter and then exit a rapid succession of WSOP events has no doubt been discouraging for durrrr fans, there’s one instance where we can happily report that the young pro was wrong. Back in April, Dwan predicted that Black Friday would dramatically affect the World Series’ entries. Thus far, entries have been collected for 17 WSOP events, and the numbers have been strong across the board with many events – including less popular games like the 2-7 Draw Lowball – showing significant increases over 2010’s entries. In all fairness, Dwan only put a number to the Main Event, guessing that it would attract 5,144 competitors to last year’s field of 7,319. That prediction might have been wishful thinking for durrrr, since he failed to post a cash finish in last year’s massive Main Event.
