Second Annual WSOP National Championship

Last year, the World Series of Poker introduced the National Championship event, and due to its success, the event will be included in this year’s WSOP. The second annual National Championship qualifiers have been announced this week and include Tom “durrrr” Dwan, among other big name poker pros. The event will take place at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on July 6th. The top 100 players from the 2011-2012 WSOP Circuit will be invited to play in the event with no buy-in necessary and a guaranteed $1 million prize pool.  In addition, the top 100 performers from the past two years in all WSOP sanctioned events will be eligible to buy-in for $10K, which will go straight to the prize pool to add to the already $1-million-deep pool. Ayre Speaks Out on Indictment

On Monday, Bodog.com, the dormant domain that once serviced US online poker players, was seized by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice. Shortly thereafter, Bodog founder, Calvin Ayre, along with three other Bodog executives, was indicted out of Maryland on illegal gambling and money laundering charges between June 2005 and January of this year. If found guilty, Ayre, who is from Canada, faces up to 25 years in prison. The other three individuals named in the indictments are David Ferguson, Derrick Maloney, and James Philip. US District Attorney from Maryland, Rod J. Rosenstein, said, “Sports betting is illegal in Maryland, and federal law prohibits bookmakers from flouting that law simply because they are located outside the country.” He continued, “Many of the harms that underlie gambling prohibitions are exacerbated when the enterprises operate over the Internet without regulation.” According to the indictment, Bodog Entertainment Group, transferred… Read More »
